From Aramaic סְמָלָא (səmālā), from Proto-Semitic *śimaʔl-; compare Arabic شِمَال (šimāl), Hebrew שְׂמֹאל (s'mól) Akkadian 𒆏 (šumēlum) and Ugaritic 𐎌𐎎𐎀𐎍 (šmảl).
