Learned borrowing from Classical Syriac, from Aramaic יַבְשָׁא (yaḇšā); cognate to Arabic يُبْس (yubs), Hebrew יַבָּשָׁה (yabashá) and Biblical Hebrew יֹבֶשׁ (yṓḇeš).
