Etymology

From the older form *ܒܪܲܬܵܐ (*brattā), variant of Aramaic בַּרְתָּא (barṯā), from Proto-Semitic *bint-; possibly a back-formation from old possessive forms such as Classical Syriac ܒܪܲܬ݂ܝ (my daughter, “braṯ”). Compare Mlahsö ܒܪܰܬܐ (brato), Turoyo ܒܰܪܬ݂ܐ (barṯo), Arabic بِنْت (bint), Hebrew בַּת (bat) and Akkadian 𒁉𒅔𒌈 (bintum).

• (daughter): This is only used for genetic and adopted daughters, not stepdaughters. A stepdaughter is instead referred to as ܒܪܵܬ ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (brāt gaḇrā, literally “the daughter of a husband”) or ܒܪܵܬ ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (brāt baḵtā, literally “the daughter of a wife”).
