ܒܪܬܐ
Appearance
Assyrian Neo-Aramaic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]From the older form *ܒܪܲܬܵܐ (*brattā), variant of Aramaic בַּרְתָּא (barṯā), from Proto-Semitic *bint-; possibly a back-formation from old possessive forms such as Classical Syriac ܒܪܲܬ݂ܝ (my daughter, “braṯ”). Compare Mlahsö ܒܪܰܬܐ (brato), Turoyo ܒܰܪܬ݂ܐ (barṯo), Arabic بِنْت (bint), Hebrew בַּת (bat) and Akkadian 𒁉𒅔𒌈 (bintum).
Pronunciation
[edit]Noun
[edit]ܒܪܵܬܵܐ • (brātā) f (plural ܒ̈ܢܵܬ݂ܹܐ (bnāṯē), masculine ܒܪܘܿܢܵܐ (brōnā) or ܒܪܵܐ (brā))
Usage notes
[edit]- (daughter): This is only used for genetic and adopted daughters, not stepdaughters. A stepdaughter is instead referred to as ܒܪܵܬ ܓܲܒ݂ܪܵܐ (brāt gaḇrā, literally “the daughter of a husband”) or ܒܪܵܬ ܒܲܟ݂ܬܵܐ (brāt baḵtā, literally “the daughter of a wife”).
