ܒܣܕܝܐ
Classical Syriac
[edit]Etymology 1
[edit]Contraction of ܒܝܬ ܐܣܕܐ (bêṯ ʾĕsāḏē, “pillow, couch, place to rest upon”, literally “at the pillows”), from ܒܝܬ (“house; site, position, location”) and ܐܣܕܐ (ʾĕsāḏā, “pillow”); inherited from earlier Aramaic אִיסָדָא (ʾĕsāḏā, “thing placed beneath, at the base or bottom; pillow”). Cognate to Hebrew יְסוֹד (yǝsṓḏ, “base, foundation”), Arabic وِسَادَة (wisāda, “a thing placed under the base of the head to sleep upon; cushion, seat or place to rest something upon”), Ugaritic 𐎊𐎒𐎄 (ysd, “base, foundation”), Akkadian 𒅖𒁲 (/išdu/, “base, foundation”), ultimately Proto-Semitic in origin. Also found as Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּיסָדְיָא (bēsāḏyā, “pillow”), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic בֵּי סָדְיָא (bē sāḏyā, “pillow”), and Assyrian Neo-Aramaic ܣܦܵܕܝܼܬ݂ܵܐ (spādīṯā, “pillow”).
