[edit]From Proto-Iranian *hajáhram, from Proto-Indo-Iranian *saȷ́ʰásram, from Proto-Indo-European *sm̥-ǵʰéslom.
Indo-Iranian cognates include Baluchi ہزار (hazár), Persian هزار (hazâr), Pashto زر (zër), Ossetian ӕрзӕ (ærzæ), and Sanskrit सहस्र (sahásra). Akin to Old Armenian հազար (hazar), a Middle Iranian borrowing.
