From Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wsstn' /⁠wisistan⁠/, to break, split), from Proto-Iranian *wi- + *said-, ultimately from Proto-Indo-European *skeyd- (Cheung 2007). Cognate with Baluchi سندگ (sendag, to break, split), Latin scindo, and Ancient Greek σχίζω (skhízō).
