From Proto-Iranian *hmarati- (to remember, recall, count) (possibly with a prefix of unknown origin), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *smárati (to remember, recollect). Indo-Iranian cognates include Persian شمردن (to count), Pashto شمېرل (śmerël, to count), and Sanskrit स्मरति (smárati, recollect).
