Etymology

Borrowed from a Turkic language, ultimately from Proto-Turkic *čerig, now an Inner Asian wanderwort. Compare Azerbaijani çəri (army), Turkish çeri (soldier), Uyghur چېرىك (chërik, soldier), Uzbek cherik (army), Chagatai چریک (çerik, soldier),[1] Kyrgyz черик (cerik, soldier), Mongolian цэрэг (cereg, soldier), Hungarian sereg (army).
