Etymology

Denominal verb of نِيَاحَة (niyāḥa, mourning), a transferred meaning of Classical Syriac ܢܝܚܬܐ (nəyāḥtā) meaning more literally “biding, rest”. Compare مَأْتَم (maʔtam, mourning), literally a verbal noun of أَتِمَ (ʔatima, to stay, to bide).
