[edit]Denominal verb of نِيَاحَة (niyāḥa, “mourning”), a transferred meaning of Classical Syriac ܢܝܚܬܐ (nəyāḥtā) meaning more literally “biding, rest”. Compare مَأْتَم (maʔtam, “mourning”), literally a verbal noun of أَتِمَ (ʔatima, “to stay, to bide”).
