[edit]From Middle Persian [script needed] (myh /mēx/), from Old Persian 𐎶𐎹𐎢𐎧 (MYUX /mayūxa/), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *mayū́kʰas (“peg, nail”), ultimately a borrowing from the the BMAC substrate. Cognate with Sanskrit मयूख (mayūkha, “peg”).
