Etymology
[edit]Suggested from the verb reconstructed in Proto-Balto-Slavic *mezgti (“to twist, to weave, to sew, to entangle etc.”) by Latvian mežģīt, Lithuanian mègzti and Proto-Slavic *mězgyrь (“tarantula”), Proto-Germanic *maskwǭ (“loop, knot; mesh”). See also Old Armenian մաղ (mał, “sieve”).
