Proto-Slavic
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Apparently suffixed + *-yrь (“agentive suffix”) from Proto-Balto-Slavic *mezgti (“to twist, to weave, to sew, to entangle etc.”) (Latvian mežģīt, Lithuanian mègzti), a Proto-Indo-European stem from which notably also Proto-Germanic *maskwǭ (“loop, knot; mesh”) derives, possibly also Proto-Indo-European *mosgʰós (“marrow; brain”).
