Etymology

First attested in c. 1500 as Middle Hindi لہو (luhū /⁠lhū⁠/) / لوہو (lohū), from Sauraseni Prakrit 𑀮𑁄𑀳𑀺𑀅 (lohia), ultimately from Sanskrit लोहित (lṓhita), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *Hráwdʰitas, from Proto-Indo-European *h₁rewdʰ- (red).
