From Medieval Latin carlina, modified after Carolus Magnus from cardina, carduina, a suffixation of carduus +‎ -īna. Berber mediation is likely, as it is found in Kabyle lqeṛnun (collective), taqeṛnunt (singulative) and borrowed with singulative marker in Spanish tagarnina.
