Etymology

The meaning of gulping or chugging may be just onomatopoeic, as an alternative form غَبَّ (ḡabba) suggests, however the root is aptly described as the Aramaic reflex of the Arabic root ض ب ب (ḍ-b-b) related to sticking, density, tumorosity, see Classical Syriac ܥܒܐ (ʾāḇā, thicket; spiny-tailed lizard).
