[edit]Etymology
[edit]Literally “fox's grapes”. In meaning Physalis species, a folk etymology-motivated and perhaps also taṣḥīf-influenced replacement term for the old-classical عُبَب الثَعْلَب (ʕubab aṯ-ṯaʕlab, literally “fox's Withania”) – see عُبْعُب (ʕubʕub) – and for the confusion between Solanum and Physalis spp.; compare Amharic ኣውጥ (ʾawwəṭ), also meaning Solanum nigrum, Solanum villosum subsp. alatum, and Physalis spp., distinguished sometimes by color-adjectives, like there is English red nightshade, yellow nightshade, green nightshade, black nightshade etc.
