[edit]Calque of Classical Syriac ܚܘܛܪܝ ܪܥܝܐ (ḥuṭray rāʿyā), itself a calque of Akkadian 𒌑𒃻𒉺 (U₂GAR.PA /ḫaṭṭi rē’î/, literally “herd’s staff”), or an unattested expression with 𒄷𒁕𒊒 (ḫu-ṭa-ru /ḫuṭāru/, “staff”).
