[edit]From Proto-Semitic *ʕarqūb-, which originates from mingling *ʕarq- – Arabic عِرْق (ʕirq, “stem, vein, nerve”) – and *ʕaqib- – Arabic عَقِب (ʕaqib, “heel”). Cognate with Classical Syriac ܥܪܩܘܒܐ (ʿarqubbā) and Hebrew עַרְקוּב (ʿarqūḇ) of the same meaning.
