Inherited from Proto-Turkic *siāŕ (marsh, dirt); cognate with Azerbaijani saz, Bashkir [script needed] (haδ), Chuvash шур (šur), Kazakh саз (saz), Tatar саз (saz), Turkmen sāz, Uyghur ساز (saz) and Uzbek soz.
