Borrowed from Aramaic, where Jewish Literary Aramaic שְׁלִילָא (šəlīlā, “embryo”) is reanalyzed from the form of Jewish Literary Aramaic שִׁילְיְתָא (šilyəṯā), שִׁילְיָא (šilyā), Jewish Babylonian Aramaic שִׁלְיְיתָא (šilyəṯā), Classical Syriac ܫܠܻܝܬܴܐ (šəlīṯā, “secundine, membrane covering the foetus”), words descending in the same manner as Arabic سَلًى (salan), سَلًا (salan, “secundine”) from Proto-Semitic *šilyat- (“fetal membrane”), perhaps with the Aramaic root of شِلَّة (šilla, “skein”) as a model: fittingly the variant pattern attested in Classical Syriac ܫܶܠܳܠܳܐ (šəlālā, “suture; implication, convoluted situation; stonelet (?); *skein”) is also mirrored by an alternative form of the present word, شِلَال (šilāl, “padding under the rear of a saddle”). سَلِيل (salīl) may be the same word borrowed another time earlier.
