[edit]Uncertain. Either related to شلغوم (šalḡūm, “moustache”) from Berber ⴰⵛⵍⵖⵓⵎ (aclɣum), Classical Arabic Arabic صَلْقَمَ (ṣalqama, “to grind teeth”), or Classical Arabic Arabic شَلَقَ (šalaqa, “to be cleft, split lengthways”).
Similar words include dialectal South Egyptian Arabic شلقومة (šalgūma, “lip”), Egyptian Arabic شلضومة (šalḍūma, “thick lip”), South Levantine Arabic شلطوفة (šalṭūfa, “thick lip”).
