Etymology
[edit]From Proto-Iranian *jr̥Hanyam (compare Persian زر (zar) and Baluchi زر (zar)), from Proto-Indo-Iranian *ȷ́ʰr̥Hanyam (compare Sanskrit हिरण्य (hiraṇya)), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰl̥h₃enyom, from *ǵʰelh₃- (“yellow; gleam; to shine”). Compare Old Church Slavonic злато (zlato), Latvian zelts, English gold.
