Etymology

Inherited from Proto-Turkic *tāy, *dāj (maternal uncle); cognate with Old Turkic [script needed] (tay, tagay), Azerbaijani dayı, Kyrgyz тай (tay), Southern Altai таай (taay), Turkmen daýy and Yakut таай (taay). Akin to Persian دایی (dâyi) and تغایی (tağāyī), both Turkic borrowings.
