[edit]Borrowed from Classical Syriac *ܚܪܘܕܐ (ḥārūḏā, literally “gnawer”). Compare Hebrew חֹלֶד (ḥṓleḏ, “weasel”), Classical Syriac ܚܘܠܕܐ (ḥuldā, “mole”), ܚܠܘܕܐ (ḥallūḏā, ḥālūḏā), ܚܠܕܘܕܐ (ḥalḏūḏā, ḥalləḏūḏā, “field mouse or jerboa”), Old Armenian խլուրդ (xlurd, “mole”).
