[edit]From بیگ (beyg, “titled man, chief”) (from Proto-Turkic *bēg; see there for more) and the genitive enclitic -em, or perhaps from بگم (bagam, “queen”). Cognate with Azerbaijani bəyim, Ottoman Turkish بكم (beyim), Uzbek begim. Compare خانم (xânom).
