[edit]From Arabic بَيْن (bayn, “between, separation”) + Arabic المِلِّيّ (al-milliyy, “pertaining to a religious community”). The Arabic word مِلَّة (milla) (loaned via Classical Persian) is used in the dated sense of "nation, people" as is current in Persian and Urdu مِلَّت (millat).
