Etymology

From Arabic بَيْن (bayn, between, separation) +‎ Arabic المِلِّيّ (al-milliyy, pertaining to a religious community). The Arabic word مِلَّة (milla) (loaned via Classical Persian) is used in the dated sense of "nation, people" as is current in Persian and Urdu مِلَّت (millat).
