Arabic

[edit]

Etymology

[edit]

From the root ب ر ق ع (b-r-q-ʕ), originally referring to a blaze or patch on a face of a horse near its eyes, then to a hooded-horse blanket for its covering of the same places; by extension any covering. Connected to the root ر ق ع (r-q-ʕ), meaning "to patch", "to cover with fabric", "to adjoin patches like a quilt", "an odd patch or mark of a different color"; the four-letter root being augmented potentially with بِ (bi, with) in the sense of "a horse with a patch (on its face)".
