Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ẹk(k)iŕ (twin); cognate with Azerbaijani əkiz, Bashkir игеҙәк (igeźək), Chuvash йӗкӗреш (jĕk̬ĕreš), Kazakh егіз (egız), Kyrgyz эгиз (egiz), Turkmen ekiz and Uzbek egizak.
