Borrowed from Greek εργάτης (ergátis, labourer; windlass, winch), from Ancient Greek ἐργάτης (ergátēs).

  1. labourer, manual worker, who uses bodily strength rather than intellect to earn a wage

  2. capstan, windlass, winch, any mechanical device used to pull in or let out a rope or cable
