Etymology

[edit]

From Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾltyštʾl /artēštār/, warrior),[1][2] borrowed from Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬙𐬀 (raθaēšta) / 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀𐬉𐬱𐬙𐬀𐬭 (raθaēštar) / 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬋𐬌𐬱𐬙𐬁 (raθōištā, warrior, literally standing in a chariot), from Avestan 𐬭𐬀𐬚𐬀 (raθa, chariot, car) + Proto-Iranian *staH- (to place, set, stand), the latter from Proto-Indo-Iranian *staH-, from Proto-Indo-European *steh₂- (to stand).[2][3] Cognate with Sanskrit रथेष्ठ (ratheṣṭha, standing on a chariot, (of such a) warrior).
