Etymology

[edit]

Learned borrowing from Middle Persian [script needed] (ʾltyštʾl /artēštār/), related to the coinage of Iranian Persian ارتش (arteš) given the reinterpretation of the classical long /ē/ as short and the alternative spelling ارتشتار (arteštâr), neither of which match historical phonemic changes. Doublet of the inherited ارتیشدار (artēšdār / artišdâr).
