Etymology

Inherited from Middle Hindi ابھال (abhal) (c. 1592) / آبھال (ābhal) (c. 1638),[1] from Sanskrit *अभ्रतल (abhratala, sky) (अभ्र (abhrá) +‎ तल (tála))[2] or Sanskrit *अभ्रकाल (abhrakāla, cloudy weather).[3] Cognate with Marathi आभाळ (ābhāḷ).
