Of the root ء ي س (ʔ-y-s), from يَئِسَ (yaʔisa) by metathesis.

Verb

أَيِسَ (ʔayisa) I (non-past يَأْيَسُ (yaʔyasu), verbal noun أَيْس (ʔays) or إِيَاس (ʔiyās))

  1. to give up hope, to despair
    Synonyms: يَئِسَ (yaʔisa), قَنِطَ (qaniṭa)
    Antonyms: رَجَا (rajā), أَمَلَ (ʔamala)
  2. to become barren, to despair of the recurrence of the menstrual flux
