Inherited from Proto-Turkic *ārïk (ditch, trench, aryk); cognate with Azerbaijani arx, Bashkir арыҡ (arıq), Kazakh арық (aryq), Kyrgyz арык (arık), Tatar арык (arıq), Turkmen āryk and Uzbek ariq.
