Inherited from Proto-Turkic *arsïlan (lion); cognate with Azerbaijani arslan, Bashkir арыҫлан (arıślan), Chuvash арӑслан (arăslan), Kazakh арыстан (arystan), Kyrgyz арстан (arstan),Tatar арыслан (arıslan), Turkmen arslan, Uzbek arslon and Uyghur ئارسلان (arslan). For the ending, compare صرتلان (sırtlan, hyena), قپلان (kaplan, leopard, tiger) and ییلان (yılan, snake).
