[edit]Inherited from Proto-Turkic *yï̄lan (“snake”); cognate with Old Turkic 𐰖𐰃𐰞𐰣 (yılan), Azerbaijani ilan, Kazakh жылан (jylan), Kyrgyz жылан (jılan), Uyghur يىلان (yilan) and Uzbek ilon. For the ending, compare آرسلان (arslan, “lion”), قپلان (kaplan, “leopard”) and صرتلان (sırtlan, “hyena”).
