Hebrew

[edit]
Root
ס־ג־ר (s-g-r)

Pronunciation

[edit]
  • Audio:(file)

Verb

[edit]

סָגַר (sagár) (pa'al construction, infinitive לסגור / לִסְגֹּר, future יסגור / יִסְגֹּר, passive participle סָגוּר, passive counterpart נִסְגַּר)

  1. To close (a door, a window, or the like).
  2. To close, close up (a store, a restaurant, or the like).

Usage notes

[edit]
  • Whereas English uses the same form, close, both for the item being closed and for the person closing it (consider, for example, “the store closes at ten o’clock” and “they close the store at ten o’clock”), Hebrew uses סָגַר only for the latter (“סוגרים את החנות בשעה עשר”), with the passive counterpart נִסְגַּר (nisgár) being used for the former (“החנות נסגרת בשעה עשר”).
