From Akkadian 𒂵𒆜𒊬 (GA.KASKALSAR, GA.RAŠSAR /karašu/), from Sumerian 𒂵𒆜𒊬 (GA.KASKALSAR, GA.RAŠSAR /garaš/). Also Aramaic כרתא / ܟܪܬܐ (karrāṯā), whence Arabic كَرَّاث (karrāṯ), also Maltese kurrat whence Middle Armenian, Armenian քուռաթ (kʻuṙatʻ).
