Related to טֶרֶף (téref, prey), as the deadly injury usually occurred to a prey animal.

טְרֵפָה (trēfáhf (plural indefinite טְרֵיפוֹת)

  1. The carcass of an animal that died due to injury or illness, and therefore not kosher according to halakhic law.
    • וְאַנְשֵׁי־קֹ֖דֶשׁ תִּהְי֣וּן לִ֑י וּבָשָׂ֨ר בַּשָּׂדֶ֤ה טְרֵפָה֙ לֹ֣א תֹאכֵ֔לוּ לַכֶּ֖לֶב תַּשְׁלִכ֥וּן אֹתֽוֹ׃
      Neither shall ye eat any flesh that is torn of beasts in the field; ye shall cast it to the dogs. (Exodus 22:30)
  2. (by extension) A food item that is not kosher.
