Middle Armenian
[edit]Etymology
[edit]Probably connected with Middle Armenian վռզ-քիթ (vṙz-kʻitʻ, “prominent nose”) and Old Armenian վռզ-ող (vṙz-oł, “obstinate”) and borrowed from Iranian: compare Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (prʾc), 𐫜𐫡𐫀𐫝 (frʾc /frāz/, “forward, prominent, distinguished; forward, forth; near”), Parthian 𐫜𐫡𐫀𐫝 (frʾc /frāž/, “forward, forth; near”), Persian فراز (farâz, “upwards; above; before; height; stubborn, obstinate, headstrong”), Northern Kurdish firêz (“elevation”), all of which derive from Proto-Iranian *frāča- (“front; forward”), from *frā-, *fra-. The idea of hurrying is connected with pushing forward. Note how in Baṙgirkʻ hayocʻ աճապարեմ (ačaparem, “to hurry”) is glossed with յառաջեմ (yaṙaǰem, literally “to go forward”).
On the other hand, Hovhannisyan derives վռազ (vṙaz) from another group of Iranian words: Middle Persian [Book Pahlavi needed] (wlyc- /wirēz-/), Parthian 𐫇𐫡𐫏𐫟𐫘- (wryxs- /wirēxs-/), Persian گریز (goriz, “to flee, run away”).
Folk etymology derives from Russian враз (vraz, “immediately, at once”), but the geographical and chronological distribution of վռազ (vṙaz) excludes a Russian borrowing.
