[edit]Etymology
[edit]The original spelling is յաւն (yawn), of uncertain origin.
Martirosyan proposes derivation from յ- (y-, “in, on, at”) + *աւ-ն- (*aw-n-), from Proto-Indo-European *h₃kʷ-n-, from *h₃ekʷ- (“eye”). For the *-n- he compares Sanskrit अक्षि (ákṣi), genitive singular अक्ष्णाः (akṣ-ṇ-áḥ).
