Etymology

[edit]

The origin is unknown. Possibly connected with կտղիմ (ktłim, to burn with furious desire). Perhaps both are Semitic borrowings, from the Semitic root related to killing, with an unexplained sense development: compare Classical Syriac ܩܛܠ (qeṭal), Arabic قَتَلَ (qatala) and Hebrew קָטַל (qāṭal, to kill).
