Etymology

An Iranian borrowing +‎ -ան- (-an-): compare Middle Persian [script needed] (hwstwk' /⁠xwastūg⁠/, “confessing, believing”), Persian (xostu, “confessing”). Ultimately from Proto-Indo-Iranian *swá and *staw- (“to praise”), from Proto-Indo-European *stew-.^[1]^[2]^[3]
