Etymology

[edit]

A dialectal word that has entered the literary language. A reduplication of the root *գուր- (*gur-), from Old Armenian *գոյր (*goyr), which is found in Old Armenian ողջա-գուր-եմ (ołǰa-gur-em) and perhaps dialectal Armenian գուրալ (gural)[1]

The root *գոյր (*goyr) is of unknown origin.[1][2] J̌ahukyan derived it from Proto-Indo-European *gʰow-ro-, with Latin faveō and Proto-Slavic *gově̀ti as cognates.[3]

Has also been compared to գորով (gorov).

According to Ačaṙyan, Old Georgian კურკურება (ḳurḳureba, embracing; being affectionate), Georgian კურკური (ḳurḳuri, murmuring, whispering sweet nothings) are borrowed from Armenian.[1] Neisser connects the last one with Old Georgian გრკჳნვა (grḳwinva, childlike caress, childlike talking),[4] which reminds Old Armenian գրգուանք (grguankʻ), գրգանք (grgankʻ, softness, daintiness; caress), from գիրգ (girg). Note also Old Armenian գրկեմ (grkem, to hug, embrace).
