Learned borrowing from Old Armenian այն (ayn). The dialectal forms are inherited. Doublet of ան (an).

    Տու՛ր ինձ այն գիրքը։Túr inj ayn girkʻə.Give me that book (which is far from you).
    Այն գրքերն ինձ դուր չեն գալիս։Ayn grkʻern inj dur čʻen galis.I don't like those book. (literally, “Those books don't come pleasant to me.”)

Etymology

From the demonstrative particle *այ- (*ay-) +‎ *նո- (*no-). The demonstrative particle is also found in Indo-Iranian: Old Persian [script needed] (aita), Sanskrit एष (eṣá), एत (etá).
