Etymology

The root is *ամ- (*am-), of unknown origin, with the suffix -օթ (-ōtʻ) found also in ծանօթ (canōtʻ), աղօթք (ałōtʻkʻ)․ Also from that root: ամաչեմ (amačʻem).
