Etymology

From Proto-Mordvinic *šerši, borrowed from Proto-Baltic *šeršnas, *šar- (whence Lithuanian šer̃kšnas (ripe; frost), šir̃vas ((blue)grey, mouldy), Latvian sirms (grey hair)). Akin to Moksha шаржа (šarža).

Compare also Proto-Finnic *harmaga (grey) (from earlier *šarma), borrowed from the same source.[1]
