[edit]From Proto-Mordvinic *čänžə, through Proto-Balto-Slavic *źansís (“goose”), from Proto-Indo-European *ǵʰh₂éns. Finnish hanhi borrowed from the same Balto-Slavic root.
Alternatively, from Proto-Finno-Ugric *čäüčV ~ *čäünčV.[1]
