[edit]Inherited from Old Slovak cíl, cíľ, from Old Czech cíl, ultimately from Middle High German zil, whence modern German Ziel. Slavic cognates include Belarusian цэль (celʹ), Czech cíl, Polish cel, Russian цель (celʹ), Serbo-Croatian циљ / cilj, Slovak cieľ, and Ukrainian ціль (cilʹ).
