[edit]From Written Oirat ᡍᠠᠯᡅᡏᠠᡎ (xalimag), an exonym ultimately from Proto-Turkic *kiāl-mak (“to stay behind”, literally “those who stayed behind”). Compare also Buryat хальмаг (xalʹmag), Mongolian халимаг (xalimag); Khakas халмах (xalmax), Siberian Tatar ҡалмаҡ (qalmaq), Kazakh қалмақ (qalmaq), Bashkir ҡалмаҡ (qalmaq), Turkish kalmak etc.
